How to transfer games on Xbox one from one profile to another

Even though physical discs are still available, the Xbox One stores all your game data on the hard drive. In most cases, the disc serves only to prove that you own the game. Although useful for keeping up with updates, it also simplifies and speeds up the process of transferring your games (gone are the days of the memory card). Fortunately, Microsoft anticipated this issue by including several different methods for transferring data between Xbox One systems. So, how to transfer games on Xbox one from one profile to another?

How to transfer games on Xbox one from one profile to another

The procedure is identical whether you want to transfer to a new Xbox One system or upgrade to an Xbox One X. Below are two methods: one that uses a hard drive and one that uses a network. The preferred method is to use a hard drive because you can automatically apply your previous system settings to your new console. Although network transfer is simple, you must manually apply system settings.

Connect your storage device and format it

Unsurprisingly, the Xbox One works well with external storage devices because it’s essentially a Windows PC under the hood. For our purposes, you’ll need a hard drive with at least 256GB of storage and USB 3.0 connectivity.

Before we begin, remember that formatting your drive for storage will erase everything currently stored on it, so make a backup beforehand.

  • Step 1: When you plug in the drive, a pop-up will ask if you want to use it for media storage or as a general storage device. To prepare the drive for backing up your games and data, select Format Storage Device and press A.
  • Step 2: A prompt will appear asking you to name the drive.
  • Step 3: You will be asked if you want to make it the default storage location for new games and data. You can just leave it because we’re using it to transfer. A notification will appear once the drive has been formatted.

Make a backup of your games

  • Step 1: Once your drive has been formatted, plugged in, and ready to use, press the Xbox button on your controller.
  • Step 2: Select Settings > System > Storage from the pop-up menu. Select Transfer after highlighting your internal storage on the right.
  • Step 3: This will open a menu containing all of your games. Check that the target device is the external drive you mentioned, and then pick the games or apps you want to share (or Select All if you want to move everything).
  • Step 4: Select Copy Selected if you want to keep everything on the original Xbox One, or Move Selected if you want to clean house.

Remember that this process may take a long time if you move many games, especially large AAA titles.

Since this process is similar to using your drive as a permanent expansion, save data transfers are naturally backed up on the cloud when linked to Xbox Live, regardless of whether you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Make a backup of your settings

After you’ve transferred your games and apps, it’s time to transfer your general settings, which include your profiles, preferences, and themes.

  • Step 1: Return to the Settings menu.
  • Step 2: Click Backup and Transfer.
  • Step 3: Click the Back Up My Settings button.
  • Step 4: Click the Back Up to Device button.

Install your new console

That’s all you need from your old console.

  • Step 1: Plug your external drive into a USB port before turning on your new console and starting the setup process. The console should identify it and remind you to copy over your preferences, saving you a significant amount of time.
  • Step 2: Click Apply Settings and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Download and install your games

You can now continue to use the external storage device for your games. However, if you prefer to use the console’s internal storage, you can copy everything back to your new system as described above. As an example:

  • Step 1: Long press and hold the Xbox button while selecting Settings.
  • Step 2: In this menu, select system, followed by storage.
  • Step 3: Select Transfer after selecting the storage on your hard drive.
  • Step 4: To transfer your games, press Select All and make sure your target device is set to Internal.
  • Step 5: Select Move to move all your games to the new Xbox and delete them from the hard drive. To keep the games on the hard drive, select Copy Selected.

How to transfer games on Xbox one from one profile to another using a Network

Install your new console

You can transfer games and apps without using an external device if you have both your old and new consoles connected to your local Network at the same time.

  • Step 1: Check that your Xbox One is connected to a stable internet connection.
  • Step 2: Because this method requires users to run both consoles concurrently, you must go through the initial setup on your new Xbox One. Unfortunately, you will not be able to directly transfer your old settings over. Start by turning on the Xbox One.
  • Step 3: Comply with the instructions on the screen.

Allow network transfer

  • Step 1: After finishing the initial setup on your new Xbox, press the Xbox button and select the Settings menu.
  • Step 2: Once there, select Network, followed by Network Transfer.
  • Step 3: From the list of choices, select Allow Network Transfer.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions on your other Xbox One.
  • Step 5: Now that both of your consoles are ready and paired, you can properly transfer data. To begin the transfer procedure, go to the Network Transfer menu on your new console.
  • Step 6: You’ll see the same transfer list we mentioned earlier. Sort via the list and share as many apps and games as you want from the old console to your new Xbox One.
